Detailed description
A Day with Lava Caving, Hot Springs, Boiling Mud Pools, and Volcanic Landscapes
Being located on a drift zone between the continents of the North American and the Eurasian plates, the Reykjanes Peninsula is one of the most geologically diverse regions of Iceland
We start our day with a caving adventure where we explore the fascinating underground in one of the many caves in the lava fields just out of the city limits. Next we enjoy views over Lake Kleifarvatn where windblown palagonite and petrified troll formations catch the eye. It has been claimed that mystical creatures live in the lake but many also know it from the famous crime novel written by Arnaldur Indriðason.
A short drive from Lake Kleifarvatn lies Seltún, an area of boiling mud pools and colorful steaming landscapes. As we drive along the Reykjanes peninsula, you can´t escape the views of the roaring Atlantic Ocean, endless lava fields, and volcano craters. Passing Grindavík, we make our way to Gunnuhver, Iceland´s largest mud pool. A stop by the coastline of the Reykjanesviti lighthouse and the jagged surrounding cliffs is a must, before we visit the bridge between continents on our way back to the city.
This impressive day tour is packed with geological wonders that will surely leave its mark on your Iceland memories.
