Detailed description
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Join us as we head west on a full day magical mystical tour to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and surroundings.
Countless lunar landscapes and volcanic vistas lie in store for us as we drive west out of Reykjavik and head towards the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier.
The glacier sits atop the active stratovolcano of the same name that took center stage in the Jules Verne sci-fi novel, ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. You might even have spotted the ice cap glittering from across the bay in Reykjavik. The volcano is thought to house mystical powers and is considered by many to be one of the seven main energy centers of the earth, so don’t be surprised if you experience an unexplained spiritual energy flow whilst in its presence.
Admire the wall of basalt columns at the Gerðuberg cliffs (only accessible if road conditions allow) and take the opportunity to pay a visit to a seal colony at Ytri Tunga beach.
Enjoy a tasty homemade meal before visiting the stables of Lýsuhóll farm in order to meet the emblematic Icelandic horse.
Discover the black church of Buðir and the coastal walk in Arnarstapi and Hellnar, dotted with spectacular cliffs and rock formations.
Look out for the remains of a shipwreck that took place in 1948 in the black sand beach of Djúpalónssandur. It is really interesting to know the story behind the four big stones at the entrance of the beach, with different sizes. They were used to measure the strength of sailors in the days of the fishing stations and their salary was determined accordingly.
Savor the moment in front of Iceland’s most famous and most photographed mountain: Kirkjufell. Made legendary in Game of Thrones
Let yourself be surprised by the beautiful Leynifoss (also known as “the Sheep’s Waterfall”), the wonderful views of the Selvallavatn lake, and the immense lava field on the other side of it.
Snaefellsnes is an area is of exceptional geological beauty – craters, lava fields (some more recent than others) idyllic, hidden coves, and bizarre rock formations all lie in wait to be explored and discovered.
Local legends and folk stories abound and are an essential element of this multifaceted tour, which hits the spot when it comes to observing volcanic phenomena, discovering Iceland’s dramatic coastline, and experiencing a more spiritual and mystical side of Iceland.
