Detailed description

Spend three days in winter exploring Iceland on this exciting tour! Leave the city far behind and take an epic journey into the Highlands of Iceland with our experienced guides in a super jeep. In winter this place is really off the beaten track! Bathe in a stunning natural hot spring pool beneath a lava field, snowmobile into geothermally fashioned mountains, hunt for the northern lights, hike in magical settings and see the Golden Circle highlights. We want you to do things in Iceland that most people never dare to dream about. This is the trip you will tell your grandchildren about!

Day 1

The adventure begins the moment we pick you up and head from the soft countryside of the south into the majestic Þjórsárdalur valley. On a clear day there will be fabulous views of the notorious volcano, Hekla, in the middle ages many Europeans said Hekla volcano was the gateway to hell. Today, this is one of Iceland´s most active volcanoes, it last erupted in the year 2000. This famous cone-shaped volcano is characterized by a series of ridges.

Winter driving is often challenging, with our experienced driver/guides, well equipped Super Jeeps and the help of our participants we will make it through to Landmannalaugar. We warm up our well-equipped rustic mountain hut and prepare dinner together, getting to know one another better and sharing life stories. Your guide will organize everything but this is a friendly trip.

Landmannalaugar means ‘the People’s Pools’, and the natural hot spring, where people bathed in ancient times, is just outside! Relaxing in the warm waters, as surreal mountain peaks surround you, with steam softly wafting from the surface of the water is a blissful and mystical experience. Maybe, the northern lights will embellish the sky with their scintillating ripples.

Highlight:

  • Super Jeep transport
  • Landmannalaugar
  • Hekla volcano views

Day 2

We prepare breakfast and begin our day.The options are snowmobiling, hiking, exploring by Super Jeep or more hot spring bathing. The mountains around Landmannalaugar are comprised of colorful rhyolite, formed from the sour magma which erupted from the magma chamber of a volcano situated south of Landmannalaugar, close to the nearby Torfajökull glacier. The area is the second most extensive high-temperature geothermal area in Iceland, the largest is Grímsvötn in Vatnajökull glacier. The scenery and possible hikes on offer in this region are stunning, Bláhjúkur (the Blue Peak) and Mount Brennisteinsalda, said by many to be the most colorful mountain in Iceland, are in the hills around Landmannalaugar.

After that we leave Landmannalaugar and head to the beautiful area around Hrauneyjar. Hopefully, after a relaxing dinner we will catch sight of the majestic northern lights. Whatever, the aurora and cloud forecasts you can be sure we will enjoy the deep peace of one of the remotest places in the South Icelandic Highlands.

Highlights:

  • Adventures in Landmannalaugar
  • Torfajökull Glacier
  • Hot spring bathing

Day 3

We enjoy a nourishing breakfast and pack up. During the morning we will head up to the Hrauneyjar Dam for some more highland sightseeing. We will stop to enjoy lunch in this area before journeying back to the lowlands, our drive will take us through the stunningly beautiful valley of Þjórsárdalur on our way to the attractions of the famous Golden Circle: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir and Þingvellir.

Your next stop will be at the very active geothermal area in the valley of Haukadalur, home to Great Geysir, the erupting hot spring. The Strokkur is the most active hot spring nowadays, can be relied on to erupt every 4 to 10 minutes.

We then make our way through the picturesque lakeside village of Laugarvatn village on our way to Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Þingvellir is the place where the Icelanders founded their historic parliament in 930 CE/AD, this is the oldest still existing parliament in the world. It is also at Þingvellir that two great tectonic plates have been slowly edging apart, creating a dramatic cliff and rift valley. You actually get the chance to walk a pathway between the North American and the Eurasian plates – walking between two continents. It is estimated that arrival in the city will be around dinner time, early in the evening.
