Detailed description

Going underground

After leaving Reykjavik we drive in a minibus for about 25 minutes and then we will reach the lava tube cave, Leidarendi, a well known lava cave in Iceland. The cave is located in Tvibollahraun lava field, close to the Blue Mountains. The cave is easily accessible to all who can walk on uneven surface.

The walk in the cave is an exciting journey and there are many things to see so we spend 1.5 – 2 hours exploring the cave and its colourful magnificence. The length of the tube is estimated to be 900 metres. You will see natural stalactites and different rock formations making this an experience of majestic and almost indescribable beauty.

Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any tools installed in or around the caves. We rely completely on the equipment we carry and it is important that people respect our guidelines. After the caving tour we go back to Reykjavik where you’ll be dropped off. You now have time to have some dinner in the city before we go out again to search for the northern lights. Pick up is at your accommodation from 21:00.

Northern Lights

We check the weather forecast closely and set of into the night for the search of Northern Lights from the city.

We will hope for the best and be prepared if luck smiles on us. We will drive to beautiful locations somewhere on the south coast, we will get out of the minibus and check for the northern lights. We will go to locations where there is no light-pollution, so that we can get a good view of the Auroras.

The solar activity puts on a magnificent show of Aurora Borealis as a result of frequent and massive solar explosions. Seeing them swirling and swaying overhead is simply an unforgettable experience; the lights are usually greenish yellow but white, red and pink lights may also appear. To watch the northern lights surrounded by the magical Icelandic nature is like walking into a storybook full of mystical beings and locations- you will never find such places or sights anywhere else.
